Description View of water powered beam engine from N.

Date 1971

Catalogue Number DF 1313

Category Photographs and Off-line Digital Images

Copies SC 355380

Scope and Content Water-powered beam-engine at Straitsteps Lead Mine, Wanlockhead, Dumfrieshire This water-powered beam-engine probably dates from the late 19th-century, but is the best surviving example of a type of engine in use from the 18th century to pump water out of mineworkings. It was powered by water from a cistern on the hillside above. Originally, the wooden rod, or 'pump spear' hung vertically into the mineshaft. The action of the engine moved it up and down, working a simple pump in the lead mine below. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
