Scope and Content Travelling crane in machine-hall inside Engine Works, Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard, Govan, City of Glasgow The Engine Works was constructed after 1869 to when the firm moved from a smaller yard at Centre Street to Fairfield Shipbuilding Yard. It was an improvement on other contemporary works both in its scale, and in the rationality of its design. This is one of the four machine-halls. The structure bridging the hall between the two gantries is a travelling crane. It runs on rails attached to the top plates of the gantry heads. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
