Scope and Content Late 19th century view of Union Street, Aberdeen Union Street runs south-east from Castlegate, crossing uneven ground on brick viaducts, and levelling part of St Katherine's Hill. Work began in 1801, with coordinated house designs probably provided by David Hamilton. This picture shows Union Street in its finished form after the first half of the 19th century. The colonnade to the left is John Smith's churchyard screen of 1829. The tower in the distance belongs to the remodelled Town-house. From 1800-1840, a generation of prestigious young architects led by John Smith and Archibald Simpson remodelled Aberdeen in Grecian neoclassical style and improved the infrastructure to meet the needs of the city's expanding industries.
