Scope and Content View from south showing Town House, High Street, Old Aberdeen, Aberdeen Originally a small settlement at the mouth of the Denburn, northew Aberdeen was created a royal burgh by David I c.1124-53. It incorporated Old Aberdeen (originally Kirkton of Aberdon), which had grown up around St Machar's Cathedral. This is Old Aberdeen High Street with the Town House at the far end. Built of granite in 1788 by George Jaffray, it is three-storeyed with a central square clock tower and octagonal belfry. It originally contained a Grammar and English school, and a Hall. Old Aberdeen was incorporated into Aberdeen in the 1890s and is now the main site of the University. The High Street contains houses for professors and various University departments as well as some private houses originally built for the landed gentry. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
