Scope and Content Aerial view of Aberdeen Harbour, Aberdeen Aberdeen Harbour was modernised by the Harbour Board in the 1960s to meet the needs of the fishing industry. However, during the oil boom, the harbour was almost completely transformed to cater for the oil industry. The modern harbour is strengthened against tidal action and has no dock gates. Aberdeen's oil boom lasted from the discovery of oil in 1969 until the early 1980s. Aberdeen became the thriving land base of the North Sea industry, with unemployment at around half the national average. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
