Date: ‘Oct 1963' General view of Benholm's Tower at its original site in Netherkirkgate, Aberdeen Originally a small settlement at the mouth of the Denburn, Aberdeen was created a royal burgh by David I between 1124 and 1153. With 19th-century agricultural improvements, the city's population doubled as workers flocked there for alternative employment. This tower, known as The Wallace (from well-house) Tower, or Benholm's Tower, was built in 1610-16 for Sir Robert Keith of Benholm. This Z-plan tower-house was added to in c.1789 and altered in the 19th century. It was latterly used as a public house. In 1962-4, the building was removed from its original site in Netherkirkgate and re-erected at Tillydrone, on the northern outskirts of the city. This was carried out at the expense of Marks & Spencer, and their new store opened on the site in 1964. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
