Scope and Content Aerial view of miner's rows at Haywood, South Lanarkshire Haywood was established between 1864 and 1871 as a mining village to house workers in the nearby collieries. This aerial photograph shows the remains of several terraces of miner's dwellings in the former mining village of Haywood. These brick-built cottages were built in back-to-back rows with 24 houses to a terrace. At its peak in 1891 over 1,200 people lived in Haywood, and it boasted a public house, post office, police station, village hall and at least one shop. Between 1900 and 1951 the majority of the population had moved to nearby Forth for work. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
