Scope and Content Fortlet at Gatehouse of Fleet, Dumfries and Galloway This Roman fortlet is at Gatehouse of Fleet. It is built on a gravel terrace 7.6 m above the E bank of the Water of Fleet. The SW side of the fort has been lost due to erosion from the river, though this has now changed course a little away from the site. This is an aerial view of the site. The fort can be seen as a series of cropmarks in the centre of the image. The entrance can be seen on the left (NE) side, where the modern field boundary cuts across the lines of the three defensive ditches. The site was discovered on the 11th July 1949 through aerial photography. It was surveyed in 1956, and there were two short excavations in 1960 and 61. The location of several of the internal buildings could be traced from their construction trenches. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
