Loch Glashan, crannog, paddle.

SC 352865

Description Loch Glashan, crannog, paddle.

Date 1996

Catalogue Number SC 352865

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 36096 PO

Scope and Content Paddle from crannog at Loch Glashan, Kilmichael Glassary, Mid Argyll, Argyll and Bute The logboat (otherwise known as a 'dugout' or 'canoe') is a simple and 'primitive' boat, but this does not imply that it is necessarily early, most examples recovered being medieval or later in date. In 1960, excavation of this crannog revealed, among other wooden artifacts, a paddle, which is now held in Glasgow Art Gallery; it is of rough workmanship, worked from heavily-knotted timber, asymmetrical in form and undoubtedly used for navigation.
