Lochlea, 'double paddle'

SC 352863

Description Lochlea, 'double paddle'

Catalogue Number SC 352863

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 36094 PO

Scope and Content Fragments of 'double-paddle' or paddle-spade from Lochlea crannog, South Ayrshire The logboat (otherwise known as a 'dugout' or 'canoe') is a simple and 'primitive' boat, but this does not imply that it is necessarily early, most examples recovered being medieval or later in date. In 1878-9, excavation of a crannog yielded this object which is preserved in the Dick Institute, Kilmarnock and is probably a double paddle-spade or similar cultivation implement of Scandinavian type.
