Dumbuck logboat

SC 352828

Description Dumbuck logboat

Catalogue Number SC 352828

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of DC 35999 PO

Scope and Content Logboat found at Dumbuck, West Dumbartonshire The logboat (otherwise known as a 'dugout' or 'canoe') is a simple and 'primitive' boat, but this does not imply that it is necessarily early, most examples recovered being medieval or later in date. Excavators at Dumbuck in 1898 came across this logboat some 18m north-east of the crannog. At the time of discovery the boat measured 10.9m in length. Further analysis showed that the boat was fashioned from half of an oak log. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
