Scope and Content Roman fortlet at Oxton, Scottish Borders This Roman fortlet is at Oxton, built alongside a stretch of Dere Street, the main Roman road in the area. The fort has several small annexes, and one very large one to the south-east, running along the side of the old road. From the air, the fortlet and all its annexes are clearly visible. Most striking of all is the long rectangular enclosure. The ditch is at least 3m wide and is 225m long, running parallel to the modern A68 road which follows the line of Dere Street. Following the Antonine reoccupation of Scotland, a comprehensive network of roads, forts and fortlets were established across lowland Scotland. Dere Street was the main eastern route into Scotland.
