Scope and Content Fort at Easter Happrew, Scottish Borders This Roman fort is at Easter Happrew. It is built on a level plateau, with steep sides to the N, S and E. The fort guarded the junction of the natural routes through the area - the Tweed Valley, Lyne Water and the gap between the Meldon hills. This is an aerial view of the site. There are virtually no traces of the fort on the ground, but the layout can still be seen from the cropmarks. The lines of defences, roads and gateways can all be clearly seen. The site has been excavated. Finds included pottery, glass and a sestertius of Vespasian. The fort was possibly built during the time of Agricola, but probably quickly abandoned in favour of the fort at Lyne, roughly a kilometre to the NW. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
