Scope and Content Antonine Wall, near Watling Lodge, Falkirk The Antonine Wall stretched from the Clyde in the west to the Forth in the east. The Wall was a linear boundary designed to control access to southern Scotland. Seventeen forts were built along its length, interspersed with fortlets and signal stations. The Antonine Wall was built of turf on a stone base with a broad and deep ditch in front of the rampart. It is this ditch which is often the only surviving part of the wall. This section at Watling Lodge is one of the best-preserved. By order of the Emperor, Antoninus Pius, soldiers from the three legions of Britain (II Augusta from Caerleon, VI Victrix from York and XX Valeria Victrix) built the wall following a successful campaign by the governor of Britain, Lollius Urbicus.
