Scope and Content Tollis Hill, Scottish Borders The fort at Tollis Hill is enclosed by an almost perfectly circular rampart and ditch and is one of a number of fortified settlements in the area, E of the Leader Water. Within these impressive defences are a number of prehistoric hut-circles and large enclosures, presumably more recent sheep-pens. The ramparts are best-preserved to the W and N (bottom right), standing 3.6-4m above the bottom of the ditch, some 9m wide. Whilst appearing impressive, many hillforts were probably constructed as displays of prestige and power by tribal leaders. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
