Scope and Content View of engine and boiler house at Scar Steading, Sanday, Orkney Scar Steading is a large consolidated farm-steading that was established by the 17th century. It was owned by the family of Thomas Traill of Westove, a major landowner on Sanday, and occupied by the estate factor. In 1874 a steam-driven engine was installed to power a meal mill and threshing machine. This view shows the boiler and engine house with the levelled chimney stack. Threshing machines were perfected by Andrew Meikle in 1786. Initially power largely came from waterwheels or horse teams but steam-driven engines became more common in the later 19th century.
