Scope and Content Stove Steading, Sanday, Orkney Now ruinous, Stove appeared on Murdoch Mackenzie's 1750 'Chart of the North-East coast of Orkney'. By 1834 the farm was the property of Lord Balfour who owned Shapinsay. In 1920 the farm was purchased by the Scottish Board of Agriculture and sold as lots. Under Lord Balfour's ownership, the prospective tenant at Stove had to be forward-thinking. Innovations included new breeds of sheep to cross-breed, trial of new crops as well as modern machinery such as the steam-powered threshing machine. The Scottish Farm Buildings Survey, a partnership between the Royal Commission and National Museums of Scotland, seeks to compile records of those farm buildings of historic interest. Field survey, backed up by documentary research, began in 1993. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
