Scope and Content Chambered cairn at Camster, Caithness, Highland There are two chambered cairns at Camster, a round cairn and this long cairn. They are two of the best preserved cairns in Scotland. They stand on open moorland close to the roadside. This is a view of Camster long cairn. It is an elongated mound with projecting horns at each end and is built on an NE-SW axis. There is a kerb of drystone wall around the base. The south end was robbed of stone to build the nearby sheepfold. The cairn was excavated in the 19th century and again over a number of years ending in 1980. Very little in the way of finds was recovered from the site but the excavation did show that the long cairn was originally two smaller cairns. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
