Scope and Content Diagram of machinery of grain-mill at Machrimore, Argyll and Bute The grain-mill at Machrimore was built in 1839 and is typical of 19th-century water-powered vertical mills. One of the last two working water-mills in Kintyre, it went out of service in the 1950s. Soon afterwards, most of its machinery was removed. Controlled by the regulator, the water flowed through the trough and dropped onto the wheel, turning the gears in the transmission. These transferred power to the mill-stones and the sack-hoist.
