Scope and Content Diagram and view of adjustable louver in tannery at Keith, Grampian The tannery at Keith is a typical example of a provincial tannery, having an airing loft in the upper two floors ventilated by louvres. It dates from the early 19th-century with later alterations. The louvres were adjustable so that the air-flow could be controlled. This worked just like a set of Venetian blinds. Moving the pole-bar tilted all the boards, increasing or decreasing the gaps between them. It was important to control the air-flow because the drying leather would be damaged if it got too hot or too cold, especially if it froze. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
