Scope and Content Plan and drawings of whin-mill at Quittlehead, Lumphanan, Grampian The whin-mill at Quittlehead is a good example of a what was once a common piece of farm equipment especially in the north-east of Scotland. It was used to crush whins, a kind of gorse bush, for cattle fodder. The horse was yoked to the horse shaft (b) so that the conical crushing stone (c) rolled along the channel or 'trough' (d). The other end of the shaft was attached to a swivel coupling fixed to a stone anchor block in the centre of the circle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
