Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of house 7. At the bottom of the image is the central hearth. Behind this can be seen the dresser, built out of stone slabs. On the right side is a bed, also built out of slabs.
