Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of the dresser in house 1. Due to the scarcity of wood on the island, furniture such as the dresser and beds were constructed from slabs of stone. There is a similar dresser in each of the houses from this period.
