Scope and Content Drawing of jack-arch construction in north range of Houldsworth's Cotton Mill in City of Glasgow Houldsworth's Cotton Mill was built in 1804-5 and is important because it was one of the first mills to built with fire safety in mind. This shows how the low jack-arches turn the weight of the floor into outwards thrust, sandwiching the transverse beams support them. The square rod is one of the tie-rods which runs the length of the building, preventing the walls from bursting. The fireproof north range was built of brick on a cast-iron frame. The roof was supported on cast-iron trusses made from prefabricated sections bolted together. Steam from the engine passed through the hollow cast-iron columns, so heating the range.
