Scope and Content Diagram of bobbin-feed and locking-bar mechanism of slubbing-billy on first floor of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay This slubbing-billy in the woollen mill at Bridgend perhaps the only example to survive in Britain. It was used to process spin partially spun wool or 'rovings' from the piecing-machine into a leaner yarn. It was similar in design to the spinning-jenny. A batch or 'draft' of rovings is stretched out between the carriage and the frame. The locking-bar clamps the frame end, and the draft is spun. Then the bar is unclamped and the yarn is wound onto the spindles pulling the next draft through. Each of the 90 spindles is kept turning by a 'string-drive' connected to a roller.
