Scope and Content Diagram of bobbin-feed and locking-bar of slubbing-billy on first floor of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay This slubbing-billy in the woollen mill at Bridgend may be the only example to survive in Britain. It was used to process partly spun wool or 'rovings' from the piecing-machine into a leaner yarn which could then be spun by the spinning-jenny. Each roving passes between wire-guides and through the locking-bar. When a large enough batch or 'draft' of roving has passed through for the desired thickness, this bar is clamped down and the draft stretched and spun. The machine's name comes from the 'billy' roller which turns the bobbin resting on it. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
