Scope and Content Diagram of faller-wire mechanism of slubbing-billy on first floor of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay This slubbing-billy in the woollen mill at Bridgend may be the only example to survive in Britain. It was used to process partly spun wool or 'rovings' from the piecing-machine into a leaner yarn which could then be spun by the spinning-jenny. When the faller-wire is in the 'up' position, the spindles twist the batch or 'draft' of wool, so spinning it into yarn. Next, the wire is moved to the 'down' position (as shown here), guiding the yarn so that it is tightly wound onto the spindle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
