Scope and Content Drawing of pot still apparatus from Ballygrant This small pot-still, believed to be from the Ballygrant district, is typical of the equipment used by small producers in earlier times. It was particularly popular with illegal operators, until their traditional, but illicit, cottage industry was suppres The liquid in the pot-still is heated so that the alcoholic spirits evaporate and pass through the 'lyne-arm' and into the 'worm' where the cold water in the now-missing 'worm tub' cools and condenses them. To make whisky, barley is allowed to germinate into malt. This is dried, milled, and mixed with hot water to make 'wort' which is then fermented with yeast. The resulting 'wash' is distilled to make 'low-wines' which is then distilled to make raw whisky. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
