Scope and Content Diagram of barley-bogie at Lagavulin, Islay, Argyll Lagavulin is an example of the kind of distillery that gradually developed after early 19th-century changes in the law made commercial distilling easier. Barley is fed onto the conveyor belt or 'barley-band'. The barley-bogie moves back and forward on the band, spreading the barley evenly over the loft floor below. The system of elevator, barley band and bogie is needed because the stored grain must be kept dry and well aired before it is turned to malt by soaking it in the steeps and allowing it to germinate on the malting floor.
