Scope and Content First-floor plan of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay The woollen mill was built in 1883 on the east bank of the River Sorn which drove the waterwheel providing power for the machinery. It is typical of smaller country factories of the time. The wool was thinned, stretched and partially spun on the 'slubbing-billy' (11) and then spun on the 'spinning-jennys' (12,13). Once it had been washed and dyed in the south wing, it might be woven on the treadle-loom (14). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
