Description Plans of excavations. PSAS fig 2

Catalogue Number SC 346157

Category On-line Digital Images

Copy of ORD 90/7 P

Scope and Content Henge monument and stone circle at Stones of Stenness, Orkney Islands This henge is defined by a broad ditch and outer bank and has a single entrance on the NW. Cultivation has almost completely destroyed any trace of the bank and ditch. A stone circle, which may have originally comprised 12 stones, lies in the interior. This is a plan of the henge and stone circle and shows the positons of the excavation trenches and the features they uncovered. The circuit of the ditch was revealed by a geophysical survey conducted before the excavation began. This henge survives as a slight earthwork and is situated on a broad flat promontory at the S end of the Bridge of Brodgar. Excavations were carried out in 1973-4 to investigate the interior and examine the relationship between the henge and stone circle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
