Scope and Content Broch known as the Broch of Mousa at Mousa, Shetland The Broch of Mousa stands on a low rocky headland on the W side of the island. The broch of Burraland stands opposite on the mainland. It has been cleared out twice in recent times and remains the best preserved of all the brochs in Scotland. This is a view of the entrance to the broch. It is the only opening on the outer wall. The image also shows the quality of construction with the outer facing still surviving perfectly almost 2000 years after being built. The broch is mentioned twice in the Orkneyinga Saga where it is called Moseyjarborg. One of these occasions was in AD 1153 when it was used by Earl Harald. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
