Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is an aerial view of house 2. Each house consisted of one room but had cells built into the walls for storage. Some of these appear to have drains in them and may have been toilets. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
