Scope and Content Settlement at Skara Brae, Orkney The settlement at Skara Brae was discovered in 1850 when a storm destroyed part of the sand-dune which covered it. The village would originally have stood inland, but coastal erosion now means it is on the shore. It consists of houses and a workshop. This is a view of one of the houses. All followed the same design with a central hearth. As wood was scarce on the island, all the furniture was made from stone. A dresser and a bed can be seen here.
