Scope and Content Henge monument and cairn at Cairnpapple Hill, West Lothian The henge is defined by a pair of rock-cut ditches with external banks. Its construction belonged to the second phase and was associated with an oval setting of 24 standing stones and two burials. Both burials were accompanied by a Beaker. An arc of the ditch of the henge can be seen in the foreground between two clumps of heather. Within the ditch, three sockets for the oval setting of stones can be made out. The profile of the cairn is visible against the skyline. This henge still survives as an earthwork and is situated on the summit of Cairnpapple Hill. In 1947-8, the interior was completely excavated and several sections were dug across the ditch. As a result, five main phases of activity were identified. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
