Description Stones of Stenness.

Catalogue Number SC 345613

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Henge monument and stone circle at Stones of Stenness, Orkney Islands This henge is defined by a broad ditch and outer bank and has a single entrance on the NW. Cultivation has almost completely destroyed any trace of the bank and ditch. A stone circle, which may have originally comprised 12 stones, lies in the interior. This photograph was taken from the interior and shows the excavation trench which was dug across the bank and ditch. One of the stones of the circle is also visible. This was re-erected in the early 1900's, and is 5.5m long and weighs over 9 tons. This henge survives as a slight earthwork and is situated on a broad flat promontory at the S end of the Bridge of Brodgar. Excavations were carried out in 1973-4 to investigate the interior and examine the relationship between the henge and stone circle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
