Scope and Content Henge monument and stone circle at Ring of Brodgar, Orkney Islands This henge is defined by an impressive rock-cut ditch which surrounds a stone circle. No surface traces of an external bank now remain, and the 1973 excavation failed to find convincing evidence for its existence. Two entrance causeways cross the ditch. This is a detailed photograph of Stone 3 of the stone circle. On its face, a number of twig runes are visible as narrow incised lines. Below them, a small cross can also be made out. The runes are a cryptogram for the man's name, Biorn. This henge still survives as an earthwork and is situated on gently undulating ground on a narrow strip of land between the Lochs of Stenness and Harray. In 1973, trenches were dug across the presumed bank and ditch, but no finds were recorded. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
