Scope and Content Redhouses woollen mill, Bridgend, Islay The woollen mill was built in 1883 on the east bank of the River Sorn which drove the waterwheel providing power for the machinery. It is typical of smaller country factories of the time. This is a metal sprinkler box or 'leaking can' which was used to oil the raw wool before it was put in the teasing machine. The addition of oil would make it easier for the fibres of wool to slide apart in the teasing machine. To make yarn, the raw wool was teased into smaller pieces, carded, joined into continuous strands and stretched, and then spun. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
