Scope and Content Spinning-jenny on first floor of woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay This spinning-jenny in the woollen mill at Bridgend was used to spin yarn from the slubbing-billy to which it was similar in design. Each batch of yarn was spun several times until it was fine enough. The spinning-jenny is made up of a standing-frame bolted to the floor, and a carriage-frame which runs on rails and is moved to control the tension on the yarn. A batch or 'draft' of yarn is stretched out between the carriage and the frame. A roller clamps the frame end, and the draft is spun. Then the roller is rotated and the yarn is wound onto the spindles pulling the next draft through. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
