Scope and Content Wooden-framed carder inside woollen mill at Bridgend, Islay The woollen mill was built in 1883 on the east bank of the River Sorn which drove the waterwheel providing power for the machinery. It is typical of smaller country factories of the time. The carder consisted of two rollers or 'cylinders' covered in spikes. These worked like lots of combs, brushing out the wool so that all the strands ran in the same direction To make yarn, the raw wool was 'teased' into smaller pieces, carded, joined into continuous strands and stretched, and then spun.
