Scope and Content Bell Mill (also known as West Mill) at Stanley, Perthshire Bell Mill was completed by 1790 and is probably the best surviving example of a mill of this period. It is under 9 metres wide and has low ceilings. The outside is built in stone to first floor level, with locally made bricks above. Stanley Mills / Industrial / Textiles; Cotton / Mill / DIGITAL IMAGES Stanley was founded in 1785 by George Dempster, Richard Arkwright, inventor and industrialist, and a group of Perth merchants. Like New Lanark, founded in the same year, it was built as a model factory village. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
