Scope and Content Reconstructed plans and elevation of the school at New Lanark, Lanarkshire New Lanark was founded in 1785 by David Dale and Richard Arkwright. It passed to Dale's son-in-law, Robert Owen, in 1799. Owen developed the village into a model community, aiming to make it both profitable and humane. One of the reforms operating in the model village was that children should go to school rather than work long hours in the factories, as others did elsewhere. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
