Scope and Content Plan, sections and drawing of domestic fish-smoking kiln at Lybster, Caithness A domestic kiln survives at Lybster in Caithness. Built on a small scale against the gable of a now-ruined house at the head of Lybster harbour, it includes all the features of a larger, commercial, kiln. It was probably used for smoking finnan haddock. The kiln has a stone-flagged firing-floor, and a low stone wall (b) with a timber-clad frame (c) above fitted with rails for the tenter-sticks loaded with herring (g). There is a ridge-ventilator (d) on the pitched roof (f). Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
