Scope and Content Horse-mill shed at Nether Pirn Farm, Peeblesshire Prior to the development of cheap and reliable steam engines, horse power was used to drive fixed farm machinery. This octagonal building is a horse-mill. Inside, a horse walked in circles connected to a shaft. The shaft turned gears which in turn powered the threshing machine. The threshing mill was invented in Scotland in the 18th century. The mill was a drum with revolving attachments which beat the grain off the straw. The grain then fell into a separate container and the straw was carried away. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
