Scope and Content Distillery and dam at Balvenie, Dufftown, Banffshire Balvenie Distillery was built in 1892 next to Glenfiddich distillery. It uses five second-hand stills from Glen Albyn and Lagavulin distilleries, and three modern stills. This distillery is not near a natural water supply and so has its own dam to make sure that it always has enough water for making whisky. Water is also important for washing and cooling and originally also provided power. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
