Scope and Content Bonshaw, tileworks, Dumfries and Galloway The tileworks at Bonshaw were established in the latter half of the 19th century to replace the earlier works at Bonshawside. Pressed red bricks and many types of agricultural drainage tiles were made here. The photograph shows the kiln at Bonshaw, the only building to remain intact, though the outlines of the drying sheds and other associated structures can still be seen. Using local deposits of clay, nine tileworks were established in Eastern Dumfriesshire to manufacture field-drainage tiles for farmers making improvements to their land.
