Scope and Content Mid 19th century view of Haddington Town-house, East Lothian Haddington Town-house was built to replace a tolbooth that was so ruinous that the council had to meet in the local library. It was financed through loans and using public subscriptions. None of the original building by William Adam survives. In 1853, the town council hired a penniless sailor to fix the jammed weather-cock. He used a kite to fix a rope to the spire and was then winched into position. The week's work earned him £5, and a public subscription restored his fortunes. The steeple was rebuilt in 1830. It had been intended to modify the original, dilapidated, structure. But this proved impossible and extra money was found to build an entirely new structure, Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
