Scope and Content First-floor plan of Stonehaven Old Tolbooth, Aberdeenshire Stonehaven Old Tolbooth was probably built as a storehouse for the burgh's overlord the Earl Marischal and became a tolbooth because of the 1600 Act of Parliament establishing the sheriff court in the burgh. New County Buildings replaced it in 1767. The Old Tolbooth was burnt by the Marquis of Montrose in 1645 because the Earl Marischal refused to support his rebellion. However, it was in good repair by 1685 when it had 'two or three storeys'. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
