Scope and Content First-floor plan of Peebles Town-house, Scottish Borders Peebles Town-house was built to replace a separate tolbooth and steeple after the burgh council decided to copy other royal burghs which had built 'new Houses, commonly called Town Houses'. Work began three years after the decision. An original fire surround and high coombed ceiling survive in the council-chamber. The 1860 extension housed the Corn exchange.
