Scope and Content Reconstruction of Peebles Town-house, Scottish Borders Peebles Town-house was built to replace a separate tolbooth and steeple after the burgh council decided to copy other royal burghs which had built 'new Houses, commonly called Town Houses'. Work began three years after the decision. Originally the ground floor probably held a prison and perhaps a school-room. Later it housed the local fire-brigade before being converted to commercial use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
